Dr. Schmidt:
I believe a brief look around Mike Warnke's website (the link for which you have helpfully provided) will tell us, more than anything else, about where Mike's heart currently lies. Although I give him points for no longer advertising "The Satan Seller," he still continues to offer "Mike Warnke Alive!", his testimony about his alleged days as a Satanist high priest. Furthermore, in his personal biography he continues to represent himself as a former Satanist and drug addict.
Personally, I was crushed by the 1992 Cornerstone article exposing him as a fraud. I had held him in high regard, had read "The Satan Seller" and had swallowed his former-satanist testimony hook, line, and sinker, and had been profoundly impacted by his recordings...especially "Hey, Doc!" He is a very funny and talented guy, and a gifted preacher. He is also still a liar and a fraud, since he refuses to make a FULL recantation. So long as his website is absent a full and complete rejection of his false testimony, or, at the very least, absent any references to his fictitious past, he still remains unrepentant by any reasonable standard of church discipline.
Think how much better it would have been if Mike had simply come clean, completely and with full repentance, in 1992. It would have been hard at first; the Christian community would have flogged him for a while, but then they would have let it go, and he would have been free to start fresh. He could have reinvigorated his ministry as a comedian and speaker, with a renewed commitment to a more moral lifestyle. As it is, this whole thing still hangs over his head like a cloud. There will always be the suspicion that Mike Warnke is still lying. I'm sure this is one reason his crowd numbers are still so small.
I won't presume to judge the state of his soul, but Mike's ministry will always be crippled by his refusal to make a clean break with his deceitful and immoral past.
