A hot topic in my local community which has a state college has been the formation of a club for gay and bisexual people. It has been struck down, and the gay-bisexual folks feel it is unfair.

My standpoint on the issue is that clubs founded on race and sexual orientation are a bad idea. First of all, nominally they represent the very thing they seem to rail against, namely exclusion of certain groups of people. Second of all, I think it an inherently bad idea to form groups of folks who it has already been demonstrated are not tolerated or received well by the public. To concentrate all of them in a collective seems to me to invite disaster. Third of all, in this particular case, the club seems to implictly have as its mission to grab acceptance from a Bible belt state by the majority. In an age which even in liberal states such things turn into riots, I'm inclined to look upon such actions as a rather belligerent attempt to somehow instill some sort of moral virtuous lesson into the lesser enlightened. Surely such a condescending medium only serves to make more difficult the end goal of acceptance.

So, what do you guys think? Should there be clubs based on nothing more than ethnicity and sexuality? Or should we focus on more innocuous sorts of groupings? I'm interested to hear other opinions on this.
