Indie has just turned 9 on Wednesday this week and has now been a smoker for 4 years. She usually sits at around 25-30 of her Benson & Hedges a day but sometimes at school this is slightly less (even though she is allowed to go home at lunchtime so she can smoke. Even though we are as careful as we can be to avoid either her or us (or her Mum) getting into trouble because of her smoking, most of her friends and almost everyone we know, knows she is a smoker. She understands that, even if she smokes in private, she always smells of smoke anyway. Although to begin with she was embarrassed about smoking as a child, this is no longer the case and she is now regularly feeling confident to light up quite openly. I guess you could say her need to smoke is now significantly stronger than her fear of what others will think of her smoking at her age. Indie understands she is heavily addicted and even though she's just still a young girl, she has virtually no chance of quitting. Not only that, but in exactly the same way as my smoking began affecting my health when I was young, indies smoking has resulted in respiratory problems which causes shortness of breath if she exerts herself. We reassure her though that she'll be fine like I was and that the advantages for her of smoking well outweigh the slight health effects her smoking is causing. She says she hates sport anyway and knows that even though the more she inhales is toxic and dangerous, she loves smoking so very much that she would hate to have to stop.

As it happens, Indie is staying for the weekend with Cathy and I and between the 3 of us, our house will be one full of dense smoke. My gorgeous wife is actually now easily the heaviest smoker in our family and I see her with a freshly lit white Marlbrough menthol between her fingers or lips almost constantly. Indie loves to count how many cigarettes she smokers and is slightly 😲 that her Gran usually smokes 70+ cigarettes a day. Even I'm impressed myself and always make her feel perfectly free to smoke with total freedom. Fortunately, Cathy who has been a hairdresser for many years is semi retired now and only works from home now part time where her clients know she'll be smoking and quite a number of the ladies do to.
