In my own case, when my aunty had helped me chose to start smoking just after my 7th birthday, she told me she was going to explain this situation to my non smoking Gran, whom I saw often. I can still remember the concern on my grandmother's face as she saw me smoking for the 1st time and the way the slipstream smoke curling from the orange cherry of my cigarette in my ashtray floated steadily into her face. It was at that moment that as a child, I understood the harm that my smoking would cause to others, especially due to being a boy who usually smoked indoors. Mu Gran often expressed her concerns to me about the damage I was causing to my health but gradually she came to understand how addicted I was and lovingly allowed me to smoke whenever with her and usually at least twice an hour. She knew that, even though just a child, her grandson was a boy who smoker 25 a day and could not cope unless he could light up whenever necessary. During my childhood, Gran became accommodating of my smoking and gave me approval to smoke in her home and car. She still loved me and understood that I had just as much need to smoke as adults and that, despite the harm to my health I was causing and also to those like herself who were forced to breath in my poisonous second hand smoke, there was nothing she could do to take away the entitlement I had to smoke. I loved her and she loved me, even soon admitting how much more relaxed I was and able to agree with my aunty that I was a child who looked adorable smoking.
