Subject: Mark's Smoke Blog--2023 Fair Sightings Report

My early concession with these writeups this year was to do a summarized version of my fair reports in a single extended post. Ultimately, my notorious verbosity led me to real-time reports not much different than what I've done in the past, albeit with a dramatic downward trend in smoker girls worth writing about. The end result is an all-purpose writeup documenting my local county fair in southern Minnesota; two reports from the Iowa State Fair; my evening at the Brown County Fair in Aberdeen, South Dakota; and two reports from the Minnesota State Fair. Apologies if it's unwieldy to readers, but from my end, doing six separate reports every summer was becoming unwieldy on my blog.

Overall, the 2023 fair season, which just ended last Saturday, was about what I expected, although a tick or two better than my worst expectations. There were a few high points from each venue that kept my morale from totally cratering. It's certainly depressing remembering what used to be 15 years ago....10 years ago...and even five years ago, as I trudge through these fairgrounds hour after hour. But we're still at the point where if you dedicate enough hours in pursuit of sightings, you can string together some good finds. I recommend those who enjoy my reports to give it a look and see if they can find some things they like.

I didn't do particularly awesome with photos this year but I'll be adding this year's haul to the gallery on my Tumblr page in the weeks ahead.
