Interesting. It's true that vaping is nothing like as sexy and glamorous as cigarette smoking. But with it being made increasingly difficult for children to get access to cigarettes or to positive promotion of tobacco, it is worth giving vaping a chance. I'm impressed that the tobacco companies have shown their ethics-busting flair of old and made vapes as attractive to kids as they can get away with, using brightly coloured, shiny, toy-like presesentation and fruit and candy flavours. Although it doesn't deliver all the tarry goodness of cigarettes, vaping does cause nicotine addiction. It's now realised that government-led promotion of vaping as 'safer' with the intention of encouraging tobacco addicts to use it as an aid to quitting has instead meant that kids think of it as 'safe'. There is no reason to think that the new generation of children addicted to vaping would have taken to cigarettes if vaping had not been available. They are a new, and very large, addition to the community of nicotine addicts and a valuable boost to the incomes of the tobacco giants. I see kids vaping on the street whereas I hardly ever see adolescent smokers any more. As to whether it will be a gateway to cigarette smoking – the original question asked, and what we'd surely all hope for – it's too early to say. The number of schoolkids vaping is increasing all the time, and they could well switch to cigarettes when they become old enough to buy them.
