My impression was that most women had more of a love-hate attitude to their girdles. Women who could get away with just a light girdle or a suspender belt regarded those items as simply "necessary" because stockings were also "necessary". Most women, though, liked to have or definitely needed figure control. Most of them probably envied their very slim friends but still preferred to "put up with" a girdle rather than allow a more imperfect figure to be seen. "I would rather not have to wear it - but I'm used to it and it's OK" was what my girlfriend told me (in about 1965).
