This thrread is about stays - or bones - not suspenders but it's probably true that plastic bones came on the scene as a cheaper alternative to matal and that was the case with suspenders too.
Going back to the days when most women wore girdles, boning was seen as an indication of the wearer's need for firmer control, so starting to wear boned girdles was a significant event. Stiff, flat steel bones were used where no movement was required (tummy control) and spring steel bones where some flexibility was needed (waist, hips, rear). Using plastic bones to replace both types resulted in much less effective function: rigid ones weren't stiff enough and flexible ones flexed too much, in only one direction and often developed permanent and uncomfortable bending.
