Subject: Back suspenders - official advice

Recently I commented under the "Getting old" thread, about the problems women experienced with back suspenders on girdles and corsets. It may be of interest to read a couple of brief extracts from a corsetry fitters' training manual (Spirella) about back suspenders.

The first extract explains why fastening back suspenders is important. I notice that in many modern photos of women in girdles the garment is worn much too high and so fails to cover the rear properly - mainly because of the modern preference for stockings to extend to the very top of the leg. Here's the quote:

....the first thing to do in fitting is to fasten the back suspenders to the stockings. This pulls the corset into a straight position and anchors it there. The corset should be worn well under the buttocks, at least two inches below the gluteal fold.

The second extract begins by explaining how to test whether the back of the girdle is fitting correctly and then goes on to warn about a tendency for women to dislike back suspenders. This, I think, confirms my observation that women found back suspenders to be a problem. Here's the second quote:

Now test the garment in bending. Ask the customer to pick up a pin from the floor, and watch the behaviour of the garment as she does so. Does it "ride up"? The back suspenders may need tightening. It is essential, especially for heavy-bodied women, to keep a secure anchorage with the suspenders at the back. Explain this to the customer–for back suspenders are not always popular, and women have been known even to cut them off!
