They may have known, or the conversation was maybe coincidence. Since they were discussing actors and I gather you are not an actor it seems less likely to me that they knew.

Interestingly you could have joined the conversation and shared expert first hand experience, but I am guessing you didn't. I am sure I would not have had the nerve to do that.

This illustrates the unfairness of society. Women can wear girdles to work, or to anywhere, and nobody would think anything of it. Nothing embarrassing at all. It is assumed to be normal attire for them. Men, not so much. Worries about sightings are usually in men's minds.

It may be that women are much more accepting of men wearing girdles, I don't know and certainly I have no statistics on it. You read about incidents where women do know and are OK with it, maybe causes them to smile. Certainly my wife knows all about it and has no objections. And even when I first shared with her she was OK with it.

My memories are getting a bit hazy (my working years stopped almost 20 years ago) but I may have worn girdles or shapewear to work occasionally. Certainly I wore them much more often to other outside activities, whether shopping, lunches/dinners, parties, movies, or other events. (And still do.) I even wore them to my Scottish Country Dancing classes. That was not as daring as you might think, it never involves more than holding hands with your partner, even though you usually change partners for every dance. No close position dancing.
