As an American I dated a Canadian for several years in the 1980s.
While I was visiting her family in Toronto I did tag along on a trip to Eatons once after it, like Sears and Montgomery Ward in the US, was already well past it's peak.
It had a different "Feel" than any US Department store.
You knew you were in Canada!

Eatons sold a lot of things that were not their own "Etonia" brand. Sears never did that until it already had oone foot in the grave.

Another importanmt difference was that, in their catalog, every price you saw was the final.
out the door "Delivered" price
No extra for shipping.
No Provencial Sales tax the way you had to add state sales tax in some states of the US

The price shown was the "out the door" price.

Don't know if Simpsons was the same way or not!

Also at it's peak Eaton's dominated Canadian Retail to a degree that Sears,, JC Penny and Wards combined never did

I saw a figure that in Winnepeg at least, as much as 60c on every dollar spent in retail stores in Winnepeg was spent at Eatons

Even in the heyday if the catalog Sears never got close to those numbers.

At least I DID get to see Eaton's while it was still there to see.
