Subject: Dress Codes in the Sixties

Yes dress codes were very strict back in the sixties. My wife and myself both grew up during this time in the upper midwest US. We both graduated from different high schools around 1970. By 1970 the dress codes had been relaxed significantly, but thru most of the sixties strictly enforced. For both girls and boys. This is what I remember.

First, girls had to wear a dress or skirt. No exceptions. A proper length was encouraged with guidelines, but only extremely short hem lines were sent home to change. It did happen but rarely. It was also a requirement that the girls wore nylons or pantyhose. It was never a problem because a girl would never go out in public with bare legs except when wearing shorts. I remember seeing girls even wearing pantyhose under shorts. (Very sexy I thought.) What the girls wore as underwear wasn't discussed. It was nobody's business including school staff. All wore pantyhose or stockings. Many wore pantyhose under a panty girdle. Both long leg and brief styles. The very short hem lines and the young girls careless habits made it obvious. Some just wore pantyhose over panties. What ever their mom's wore, most likely was what the daughter wore.

The boys dress code was much simpler for obvious reasons. Dress pants and a shirt or sweater. No tie was required. Surprising since the girls had to wear a dress. Dress shoes, no boots. Tennis shoes were wore in gym only. Hair and sideburns length was regulated. Hair couldn't go over the shirts collar, and sideburns could be no longer than to the bottom of the ear lobes.

By the early seventies most of the dress codes went by the wayside. At least here in the US, we entered into a time of self entitlement. I'm entitled to wear anything I want attitude. And the parents supported it. So school officials had to back off. What nobody seemed to realize was that needing to conform to a dress code was part of the kids education. Habits established at a young age carry on into adulthood. (I believe this is part of the reason wearing a girdle went out of style.)
