I am not aware of girdles being specifically referred to in school dress codes in Britain and single-sex secondary schools were very common, so most boys didn't see girls around them at school. I understand that in the 1950s and 1960s it was not uncommon for girls to discuss and compare with their friends what they were wearing and could influence one another. A girl who "needed" a girdle but didn't wear one (or not an adequate one) were criticised.
Although I never saw a girl lift her skirt to show details to another girl, I do remember visiting an aunt who lived overlooking a girls' high school and on one occasion seeing some of the younger girls at break time running around with skirts tucked into knickers (to make running easier) but with stocking tops and suspenders revealed!
