We see a lot of teens and college age patients this time of year, especially summer camp and for school. It's pretty common that they are to get a shot or two! Earlier in the week, this mom brought in her 16 year old daughter who needed a tetanus for camp, as she was to be a camp counselor. She also required a screening physical which she didn't know was necessary and was rather upset when told to undress. She was wearing a very tight tube knit skirt and filled it out as well as her blouse. She was a C-cup and when the skirt came off had on a very cute thong, which she had to remove! She saw one of the female doctors who isn't to concerned about modesty and when it came time for the shot had her bend over. The poor girl began to cry and did so when jabbed in her left buttock. We use an HMO and they are still seen in a pediatrics-adolescent department with exam rooms off a long hall. It is common place to hear the nurses tell a mom and her daughter to have the daughter provide a urine sample and return to the exam room and "be sure to have her undress, everything off for the doctor!" Typically, the teen tends to leave on her panties, which when I return to weigh and take a temp are removed much to her displeasure. Most want to be examined without mom in the room at that point! All protest rectal temp and having to get shots - doesnt matter if given in the arm or bottom. Just in case you thought boys are any different, they protest just as much! Another day!
