Was told by getting the injection vs oral that i would feel better since I was already in the hospital so I agreed. Was lifting my sleeve and an older nurse came in told me to lay on my stomach because the shot was on the bum. Omg when I got injected the needle wasnt bad but the pain was so bad and burned from from the antibiotic I almost passed out and even when it was over the pain throbbed so bad. Going oral for now on

I will be entering hospital in a few weeks for major surgery. I have been told that when the IV line is removed further medications will be oral but some will be intramuscular and in my bottom.

Peter, I would think that they wont release you until youre safe to go home so oral antibiotics would be enough?

I had 5 spine surgeries and between all 5, only got 1 small shot in my butt. Other then that, everything was intravenous. I only let them give me the shot because I figured it would be a small one. It was to dry me up she said. It still hurt afterwards so that was bad.

Its my understanding, the only reason to give a shot of Penicillin etc, is because it works instantly. What you would need wouldnt need to work that instant....

In any case, let us know.

PS. I had 5 spine surgeries because of 1 herniated disc and I kept having them redo it till they got it right. Im fine now....

I had IV lines removed for oral medications pain killers and such but still got blood thinning agents injected twice a day after the blood transfusion. Also got some other medications injected. for last couple of days I was in hospital and I wasn't only one. There was a lady in next bed who had Hysterectomy and I heard nurse telling her to turn over as injection had to go in her bottom and she still had IV connected.

Yes if they remove your IV line and you need some medication that cannot be given by mouth then you will get a shot as long as it can be given IM. Sometimes patients lose their IV access for various reasons anyway and they have to be given IM meds anyway.

Years ago I had to have a procedure done in day surgery and anesthesia was not needed. It was still surgery but on my arm and he used lidocaine and I never felt a thing. I had to have two shots of antibiotic though and they had to be given IM since I did not have a IV.
