In 1984, there was a Hepatitis outbreak among several employees at our elementary school. I was in the 5th grade. All of us were sent home with a sealed envelope to give to our parents. The envelope contained a letter from the health department and school board, requesting authorization by signature to allow us to be vaccinated in school. My mother signed it and I returned it the next day. About three days later, we were all sent single file to the school gymnasium, one class at a time. The gymnasium had three curtained off stalls where we were all divided up single file, girls and boys together. I didn't know what was going on at this point. But after the first few students came out from the curtained stalls, some were crying, and most were walking funny. We all began to get scared. We weren't allowed to break out of line and talk to those kids because they had them lined up on the other side of the gym. A girl named Heather was in front of me. She didn't appear scared at first. They called her behind the curtain. A couple minutes later, I saw her come out crying and limping. The nurse came out and called me. I was trembling and in no hurry to come to her. I recognized the nurse as one of the girls that gave me my shots a year earlier. She could tell I was scared to death and said "It's okay honey, I'm not going to hurt you." There was another lady behind the tent looking over documents. She confirmed my name, and the nurse undid my pants, pulled down my underwear in the back and had me lie face down on the gurney. I was so scared when she picked up the loaded syringe. I was even more scared to protest because I was afraid my teacher would paddle me when I got back to the room. I felt the nurse rub the cool alcohol on my butt cheek, to the right of my crack close to the hip. I trembled, waiting for the familiar pinch and sting. I felt the nurse pull my skin tight between her thumb and finger, then a dull ache for a couple seconds. I couldn't hold back. I begged her to please get it over with, and she said "honey, it's already over with" as she placed a bandage on my behind and massaged the area a few seconds. She helped me down off the gurney and pulled my pants back up. I started to walk, but I noticed I couldn't help myself from limping. It was embarrassing at first. LOL, the walk reminded me of Tarman the Zombie in Return of the Living Dead. I lined up behind Heather, who still had the sniffles and red eyes from crying. I asked her if the shot really hurt, and she said it pinched bad and made her cry. I told her it only felt like a dull ache for myself. A girl named Natalie lined up behind me and said her shot felt dull, like a bruise. She wasn't limping. We all went back to class. My butt started to hurt more, and it was hard for most of us to sit long. The principal finally let us recess on the playground for the rest of the afternoon as soon as lunch was over. The physical activity helped work out some of the soreness. By the time we went home, most of us could barely feel any soreness in our bottoms. But we all got our laughs with the funny limping in the gym.
