 I dont'know where nurses practice; but in the late '80s-early '90s, a young lady who came to inject me, told me she practiced con a lemon.

We practiced on dummies first (which was mandatory part of the education).
Later we as well practiced on each other. This was voluntary (so no one had to receive injections). However, there was some peer pressure to participate in it.
