Having just witnessed his older brother get an injection, he started screaming and crying “I don’t want a shot!” “Get away from me!” I said to him “You might as well stop screaming because in a minute you ARE getting one.”
One of my nurses and his mom grabbed the boy by his arms and pulled him over to the table. He began screaming “I don’t want it. Let me go!” After trying to resist, they managed to get him up on the table. His mother and my nurse turned him on his stomach. The boy screamed even louder “I don’t want it you @#!@#@, I don’t want a shot”
His mother held his legs and one of my nurses held his upper body. She put her elbow on his back which stopped him from struggling. My other nurse loosened his belt and lowered his pants. I was preparing the injection and used the same 20 gauge 1 ½ inch needle. I kept thinking about the language he used and I must admit, it made me angry.
I walked over to the screaming boy and lowered his underwear below his butt. This was one shot I was going to enjoy giving. The boy was wailing “”Let me go you @#!@#@ I don’t want it.” I said to the boy, “it’s a little too late for that mister. In a minute you are getting this needle” I decided I would go slow as I wiped the top side of his buttocks where I felt a muscle. I used plenty of alcohol because I knew it would sting more. The boys screaming now turned to shrieking.
With some joy I said “Get ready, this is going to hurt.” While the alcohol was still wet I held the needle like a dart and with a quick motion, I jabbed the needle all the way in to the hub pushing in even more; just like I did his brother. The boy began yelling “owe owe owe stop!”
I said “get ready young man, here comes the medicine." I then started slowly pushing the medicine in and he was using all of his power to break free. The boy was shaking his head back and forth screaming as the medicine went in. My nurses and his mother held him tightly as the medicine filled his muscle. It took a little longer than his brother and when it was done, I quickly pulled the needle out.
I said to the boy “calm down, it’s all over.” The boy was crying repeating, it hurts mommy, it hurts.” “Owe owe owe” I said to boy, maybe in the future you won’t play in poison ivy. His mother went over to him messaging his butt. The boy was still shaking his head back and forth screaming.
Both boys were rubbing their buttocks and crying. They were in too much pain for any cussing now. Their mother said “Thank you doctor.” She seemed very gratified and about 15 minutes later they all left limping.
