Would anyone, should the opportunity present itself, take the rectal temperature using a glass rectal thermometer of a less capable youngster (age 5 to 10 years old) who may be unfit for having a glass oral thermometer placed in the mouth?

I think there are many here who would prefer to use a rectal thermometer on any child up to 10 years of age, certainly on any child who does not keep an oral thermometer in place with their lips closed. Tympanic and temporal thermometers just are not accurate enough.

There are similar cases of children up to that age who do not easily swallow pills and get Feverall suppositories for their fever reduction using Tylenol.

I grew up in that situation and had both experiences and had to lie on my back with my head over the edge of the bed and get nose drops when my nose was stuffy.

These were the common practices when I grew up in the 1950s but continue to this day.

It was a lot easier and less expensive to purchase online a veterinary 5 inch glass rectal thermometer than a standard 4 inch glass rectal thermometer. I bought a 6 pack which greatly lowered the cost per thermometer. Also, with one being an inch longer than a standard glass rectal thermometer it would be just right sized for an 8 1/2 boy like Kyle. Also, with it being thicker than a standard glass rectal thermometer will enable it to have a more firmer contact with the lining of his rectal interior as well as enabling a nice, tighter seal around it at the entry point. Along with delivering a very cold glass rectal thermometer into his rear end which is said to enhanced firmer contact, I would expect a very reliable reading. One thing that caught my attention about these glass rectal thermometers that also make them unique is that they have only degrees F scale on them which to me make it easier to read.

The only think I do no like about the thermometers is that the non-business end has an integrated glass ring which for anyone seeing it in use might know that I am bending the rules by using a veterinary glass rectal thermometer to take the rectal temperature of an 8 1/2 year old boy. I certainly would not show a mom interested in taking the temperature of say an 8 to 10 year old youngster of her own the glass rectal thermometer with a glass ring on the other end, much less demonstrating its use. So an online friend that shares that our common interest suggested to me that the glass ring be carefully filed off just to the 2 attachment points to the thermometer. I tried it on the first one and that end and you would never know there was a glass ring there. It does take some time and patience. By the way, it is exactly 5 inches long because the length of th glass ring was not counted in the advertised length. I did the same thing for the rest of them.
