In reply to: Leah 's message, "Shots in my butt - help?!" on Sunday, May 24, 2015, 08:06: pm

As you say, Leah, embarrassment can be the worst part. I used to feel the same as you until I realised that the buttock is by far the least painful place to be injected and I now actually request all shots back there. Try to bear that in mind for your next posterior puncture.

Because you have to wait so long in position, taking something to read or listening to music on your IPod could be a useful diversion.

I have had many injections in the bottom so please feel free to email me for further advice.

Does requesting all shots in your behind make you feel less vulnerable, since you have a bit of contol over what's going to happen? In theory that sounds as if it would resolve some of my feelings but I could never make that request! Would it be reasonable to request that the panties-down part be just when she is actually giving me the shot? I don't understand why I was exposed for so long while I waited for a reaction, unless she just didn't want to have to pull them down again each time she came back to check me.

Good question, Leah, because bending over awaiting shots in my bare bottom always makes me feel extremely vulnerable. I just remind myself that it is the least painful place to be injected.

I suppose getting them back there at my own request does give me a feeling of control, but I never thought of it that way. I prefer when the nurse decides to give them to me there because it takes some willpower to make me ask for them in my bottom. My usual practice is to specify the injection site when making the appointment so the nurse gives me no choice when I go for them. I find it easier and less embarrassing to do so by telephone or email than in person.

I have never been left exposed as long after being injected as you and I see no reason not to cover your bottom between the shots and the subsequent inspection. Whenever I try to expose just a bit of buttock the nurse usually pulls my pants down further with the explanation that seeing the whole muscle helps her identify the best site, but you have nothing to lose by trying. You could explain to the nurse that the worst part for you is the embarrassment of having your panties all the way down for such a long time. A good nurse should want to minimise both your pain and embarrassment.
