The first symptom of illness well into my teens was a sore throat. I wanted to take pills rather than the dread penicillin shot in my bottom but the sore throat prevented me from swallowing them. I vividly recall desperately but unsuccessfully trying to swallow a pill before inevitably being told to pull down my pants and bend over the receptionist's lap for a shot when visiting the doctor (or rolling over in bed for one when he visited me). I remember deeming the treatment as merely exchanging a sore throat for a sore bottom.
