In reply to: Amanda 's message, "Antibiotics and pain medications" on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, 10:35: am

I had a near similar experience. I went through a gyn open surgery and following a 5 days in hospital on IV and IV antibiotics as well as twice daily heparin in the belly as I had a clot during my last pregancy. I had only one painful injection in my butt for pain. I was discharged with bruised belly and very sore arms from the IV and daily blood samples. Two days later the wound was oozing and I started to have fever. I was 150lbs then, I went to the emergency room and they told me that the wound was infected and gapping and that I will have to be readmitted for IV antibiotics and again, the heparin in the belly. I was also getting pain medications by the IV before the daily painful dressing and intravenous vitamin C.
Three days later, my IV went out and two nurses a blood sampling technician and an ICU Doc tried each twice or even more without success. The attending told me that they either would insert a line under x-ray or give me my medications by intramuscular injections. I told him that I had enough woulds and accepted the intramuscular injections.
On the same day I started the twice daily agony of injections, the nurse would knock on the door with a tray with two syringes, one in each cheek twice a day. On the following days I was chivering at the thought of the pain that I will be going through. One antibiotic (a cephalosporin) the nurse told me was causing a severe pain and burning that would lance through my whole limb and the second an antibiotic too, taken every morning needed a blood monitoring and kidney functions with blood sampling (many pokes to have a small sample!) every day.I would also get a pain medication and the worse was a the vitamin C. I begged the doctor to stop it as It was very painful especially that I could only lean on the sides to get the injection as my belly would would limit me from lying on my side on stomach. After few days I would start crying at the sight of the nurse entering the room with the syringe tray as I knew what was waiting for me!
A week later I was a moving sore bruise and was having difficulty sitting in bed! They had to restitch the wound and I had to continue on oral antibiotics for a week later. I have tears in my eyes when I remember this painful experience.
