DIGITAL GENERATION
It is undeniable that there is a new kind of student in classrooms around the world. This new generation of students uses facebook, msn, google among many other types of social interactivity. Some of these students have sat on their parents laps while they check their e-mails, google or chat on the internet before they could even walk or talk. By the age of three or four these children already surf the internet by themselves even if they do not know how to write or read. They process information differently from their processors. According to Marc Prensley, it is likely that students’ brain have physically changed literally. The term to define the youngest generation, who is born after 1990, is Digital Native. The students today are all “digital speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and internet. But, how are the analogical era teachers going to be prepared to teach these digital and technological minds? The Digital Immigrants, not born into digital word, have to become fascinate by and adopted many aspect of the new technology, but they always have the foot in the past.
A language learned later in life, the Digital Immigrants instructor, who speak an outdated language are struggling to teach a population the speaks a entirely new language. Nowadays it has been a real challenge to get the students attention. The board and chalk are no longer enough, and at times, teachers and students don’t seem to be on the same page. While students use google, teachers still look up in the book. While students type, teachers still use handwriting, students are fast and teachers are slow, students are mult-tasking and teachers are serial-thinking. There is a huge gap between students and teachers, and how is it possible to learn if there is this massive difference in how information is transmitted? Digital Natives are real and the way of communication might need to change. It is time for teachers to start to “digitalize” themselves, because students grow with the technology. This is not an easy task since our minds weren’t prepared as children to use digital technology. The master should not only participate but also guide students through these changes. Accepting a typed work or letting the student e-mail it should not be a problem but a tool to help both the student and the teacher. Another challenge is to understand the student’s minds, as this generation asks for faster and more contextualized information. The subject is worthless if the students don’t know how and when a specific subject is connected to their lives. It is a great revolution for teachers to deal with this new technology and, more importantly, how to use it in their favor so they can take advantage and accomplish what every teacher grasps: to get closer to their students.
Therefore the teachers are bound to make students more engaged on learning by bringing more tools that make learning easier and more interesting. Students should be encouraged to use their technological knowledge, and we teachers should be encouraged to take part on this digital generation.
