Very much the same at my school - whatever the official PE uniform list said, it was basically up to the teacher what we wore. Some were quite relaxed about it, others were very strict. I fell foul of one of the latter group when I turned up to our first PE lesson with him wearing a t-shirt that wasn't approved by school regulations. The teacher went berserk - 'take that shirt off boy' - and not surprisingly I was ordered to do PE in just my shorts. At his instruction, I remained barechested for PE the rest of that term, which even included cross country and other outdoor lessons such as football. Sometimes other boys had to go barechested as well but I was the only one with his top off in each lesson.
