28 Years ago in my comprehensive school if you did not have a clear white T-shirt you had to do pe in the gym topless with no vest on. I see there are still schools mainly primary schools in the UK that allow or even require boys to do PE with just a pair of shorts on.

This is despite the fact that Junior schools unlike comprehensive schools have no showers. Boys are still forced to wear white shorts where the PE Teachers can see their underwear underneath but girls can wear black leotards or black shorts where there undergarments cannot be seen.

In sty Michael’s neither boys or girls are allowed to wear trousers in normal classes and must have their legs exposed. For Pe boys are just made to wear shorts whereas girls seem to have choice of pants and vest, T-shirts and shorts or leotards.

Tornedale infant school is vaguer and does not specify gender but it is pretty obvious that boys will be wear white shorts and maybe a vest but girls have the choice of a blue, red or black leotard. There is no mention of anyone allowed to wear T-shirts.

Why cant boys wear blue, red or black shorts?

Equally in Larkshill boys have the option of going bare-chested or wearing a white t-shirt but girls must either wear a T-shirt or wear a leotard. If going shirtless is so good in school why is not the same opportunity provided for girls? Under the age of 10 kids are below the age of criminal responsibility and most females have not entered puberty yet.

In North Lincolnshire girls are limited to a black leotard and boys for shorts so presumably the school is using the old argument that the T-shirt may be entangled in the gym equipment but in Broom Valley girls have a choice of leotard or T-shirt so surely there must be the likelihood of female pupils being caught up in equipment.

It should also be considered that 99% of other primary schools require boys to wear T-shirts and there has been no case of suffocation of gym equipment. If you look at professional gymnastic clubs outside of schools boys actually get to wear more than girls. It is not uncommon for both boys and girls wearing leotards in these clubs with boys getting the bonus of wearing shorts over leotards to cover any embarrassing bulge. So why not allow boys to wear black leotards in schools instead of being forced to wear transparent white shorts in a Lewisham comprehensive school.

Another thing I have noticed it was mainly the Labour party between 1997-2010 that introduced the concept of unisex pe Kits in schools but the worse examples appear to be in places like Rochdale, Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Lewisham and until recently Marshfield primary school in Cardiff. These are all “white working class” areas run by labour councils. Ironically, you no longer see bare-chested PE in the Tory run shires. Maybe white working class parents are doing it to stop conservative minded Pakistani parents sending their kids to their schools thus reinforcing racial stereotypes.

Could be those working class parents still see boys as cannon fodder who are either destined to serve in the army or go down the coal mine so need strict skimpy kits and a lack of privacy. Whereas wealthy middle class parents down South are more likely to stand up for their male offspring against pervy PE teachers, school governors and traditionalist head masters. An interesting point in this era where there is supposed to be gender equality.

SCHOOL RULES
These are kept to a minimum and required for safety and behavioural standards. Special rules that parents should be aware of are:-

1. Boys are required to wear short trousers in class. Long trousers may be worn by Y6 boys. Children may wear long trousers to and from school if parents wish – but must change on arrival in school.

2. Girls likewise will not be allowed to wear trousers in class.

For P.E. boys are expected to wear shorts. Girls should wear knickers and vest (young infants and all Reception children), shorts and white t-shirt or black leotard (older infants and juniors.) Children will do P.E. in pumps or bare feet.

We aim to foster positive attitudes with our children and discuss fair play and good sporting behaviour. We are conscious of safety aspects during PE and this is why no jewellery must be worn. We have a dress policy for indoor work that girls wear either a leotard or shorts and T-shirt and boys wear shorts.

The children wear vest and pants or a leotard (blue red or black) or white shorts for indoor P.E. lessons. All year groups participate in outdoor P.E. lessons, weather permitting and we ask that a basic P.E. kit be provided for this purpose. Please note that cycling pants or Bermuda shorts should not be worn.
