I also have no pictures, though we did. I went to get them duplicated and they seem to have 'disappeared' from the photo lab in '71. I firmly believe they were stolen. I was there for qualifying when Friday grabbed the pole at Trenton NJ in '71.....as I recall Petty lost most of the day changing a blown engine, Friday came out for qualifying and put up an incredible perfect lap on the toughest 'oval' (it was kidney beaned shaped with a dogleg right turn in the backstretch) ever built for the Grand Nationals.

Qualifying wasn't over until a certain Jim Hurtibise, without a lick of practice cuz he had just been wisked in from Flemington NJ practice, came down the front stretch and forgot to lift into turn one. "Herk" got turned around and went through the wall and down the other side. Friday's pole was secured.

We had only planned on watching qualifying for some reason, mostly because my uncle who took me there was an Indy car snob, but we went to the race the next day. I believe Petty ruled that day, I'm not sure, but I am sure Friday ruled qualifying that weekend. Being a young lad, and not being able to watch racing as folks do today, I was saddened to learn in a short paragraph on Monday that Friday had passed at Daytona......I know nothing of the circumstances, but I wlll always remember that one perfect lap he ran.

It saddens me to see another shortened career, who knows what might have been.

Chuck
