Among the other things I "procured" (rescued from the dumptster) in our recent PD move were several of those old helmets. Apparently the patrol guys were required to wear them (at least on occasion) in the late 60's and early 70's "just in case" the riots at UC Berkeley or San Francisco got out of hand and civil unrest spilled into suburbia.

Some of my more seasoned colleagues were still issued the duty helmets into the mid-80's although by the time I showed up, they were down to 4 inch barrels on the revolvers and plain black riot helmets that pretty much stay in the locker room.

Gotta love "old school"...
