"Gone From Daylight 33 & 34"
I definitely wanted to start the "Red October" vampire updates with a brand new chapter of "Gone From Daylight"! Not only to get readers to catch up and re-introduce them to the series as a whole, but to give people a chance to jump into the series for the first time. I think I made a mistake by giving everyone an entire week to read and immerse themselves into the story. The month seemed like it was half OVER before I even got started this year! But I felt it was important to get everyone on the same page before the new stories started getting posted. Mostly because I have a lot of material that ties in directly with the "GFD" saga as a whole, and I didn't think they would have the same impact without new readers catching up on the material.
These back to back chapters were meant to push the story forward into a new series of events that will eventually lead up to the next "Gone From Daylight" chapter, "GFD: Exodus". It finally brings Justin's best friend, Richie, back into focus and we all get to see him adjusting to his crossover for the first time. It's a hint of what Taryn must have gone through while Justin was being born into darkness himself. We get to experience some of that tension and uncertainty along with him, as well as the relief when finding out that things will ultimately turn out for the best in the end. I also had a bit of fun showing the duality of Jeremy's character in the first chapter. On one hand, he's not as bad as he pretends to be, and actually shows a certain level of warmth and understanding to Justin, and his client, 'Matty', upstairs. BUT...the other side of that coin shows itself by the end of the chapter. Jeremy is not as 'nice' as he appears to be either. He has a very dangerous business to run, and he does what he has to in order to survive. I kind of like that about Jeremy's character. I think we'd all have a dark side to us if it was necessary for us to maintain it.
The second chapter has Justin searching for his purpose and following the path leading up to the Jeweler. This chapter ends abruptly in a lot of ways, but this episode was more about Justin than anyone else. I wanted to keep it that way. He's a bit lost during this chapter. His character is hanging in the balance. He's decided to separate himself from Taryn, Bryson and Dion and the others that he trusted at the lot are all torn apart from their recent tragedy, and even Doc, who might have been able to truly help him out, has been alienated from Justin's life and current choices after abusing his abilities to get what he wants from him. this is one of the many parts of the story that I needed Justin to be 'alone' for the most part. He even questions whether or not he can count on Comicality ever again, seeing as he has disappeared from Justin's life completely.
Both chapters will boost the story up to the next level. The stakes are obviously higher than ever before, and Justin is unsure of how much control he has over the massive powers within him. What comes next will have a MAJOR impact on Justin's mindset! And by the end of this chapter, he may finally begin finding the clues that he needs to find in order to evolve into the vampire that he needs to be. But I'm not giving anything aay until then! Hehehe! :P
This is also the first appearance of the 'Jeweler' character in the series. Other characters, such as 'Strings', 'Bookworm', and 'Minefield', will play larger roles in the chapters to come. But for now...the mystery of the Jeweler's intentions will be fun to play with for the time being. Good guy? Bad guy? You'll just have to wait and see, won't you? :)
