The last time Colgate played at UConn was in 2012 - and there were no plans at that time for UConn to play a return game, which they only do for power-conference teams. The idea of a visit to Hamilton only came up last Fall after Syracuse refused. When you say "return visit", do you mean that you expect Colgate to play a return game at UConn next year?

Steve, you keep writing that MHoc will be playing in Italy. No. They will be playing in Northern Ireland. They played in Italy several years ago.

My mistake about the Conn game being a return game. It seems like only last year that I recall seeing the article about the game and the photo of the 2 presidents - brother and sister - and the coaches with tee shirts etc.
About Europe, the men's hockey team is heading to Italy soon for the experience, playing there as they did 4 years ago. They will also be in Belfast for a tournament in November.

The men's bb team played Duke in Emmett Davis' last year, when Duke was defending national champ and had Kyrie Irving, Kyle Singler, and at least 3 others who played in the NBA. They lost by 52. I was there and it was a blast watching the Raiders cope (well) with the pressure from the Cameron crazies, and (not so well obviously) that from Irving and Singler. The Raiders played very respectively in the first half, hanging with the Blue Devils well into the game until the inevitable.
The team loved the experience of playing in Cameron. The wbb team playing UConn, at Cotterell for crying out loud, would be an analogous situation. I can't see how this can possibly be a bad thing.

Scheduling a game with no possibility to win goes against a winning mentality/philosophy, and please don't rationalize it as a great experience for the student athletes. That is just a cover up/excuse for saying we have no shot at winning. I guess it may be status quo for certain departments as they need to generate revenue, so I get that perspective. Just will never be on the side of the fence and be excited for exposure when a team gets beat by 40 on a national stage.

I like the part of Cotterell Court being on the national stage. And like I said earlier... I'll ask the players and coaches afterwards what benefits they gained from playing the national champions. That should do it for me.

My belief is that no team should enter a contest with no chance of winning (or even being competitive). If that's the case then it is obvious that the reason for the game is $$$, and this is a bad thing for the players.

Doing it for the money? -- The Lone Haranguer, 08/10/15 10:42:16am Mon
How much money are we talking about? It is Cotterell (seating capacity 1750) for cryin' out loud. The gross gate receipts won't even cover a full scholarship.
If you define success as only winning or or almost winning then the game isn't worth it. But success in these type games is measured at the team and individual player levels in addition to the benefits to the Colgate and Hamilton communities. A blowout is a given, but we always have our SAT scores and US News ranking to beat them up on.

Exactly!
...and when did this winners/losers business creep into our collective unconscious? Come on already! We are talking about Colgate students playing the 2014 top ranked DI college basketball team. We are not talking about professional sports and all that goes with its earnngs model.
Colgate supporters know better than that. It's about our students and their chance to play Conn and thereby challenge themselves. Ok?

Incredible. Such negativity before the entire schedule is even released. I certainly hope our women's hoops players are not reading some of these pessimistic, critical comments. They deserve better.

Hoopie, I agree entirely on all counts.
Fortunately, the team is enjoying their visit to New Zealand now. Gocolgateraiders.com includes a story about their latest win. I checked out their opponent online and see they were 2014 national champions!
But win or lose any particular game, our teams are comprised of winning students and the value our coaches and administrators deliver is first class. That's the way I choose to see it.
Go 'gate!
