In reply to: BobP 's message, "Rotax 582 starting" on Wed, Oct 09 2013, 12:29:35 GMT

Hi Bob,
Replace the battery and I'm sure the problem will go away. I have a 14a/h Bosch battery. I have found over 16 years operating a 582 that they are heavy on batteries. I replace mine every three years or as soon as there is any noticeable loss of performance. The Rotax needs a really good spin to start, and I believe the mags do not produce a spark until a certain RPM is achieved.

I would suggest that a 5a/h battery is too small, and certainly if you have flattened it completely a few times I'm surprised it works at all. When my regulator packed up it destroyed the battery decisively by boiling all but the last half inch of acid from the battery over a 2 hour flight.

If you are cranking at reasonable speeds but still no joy, you might perform a detailed inspection of carburetor mounting rubbers for any leaks, (have you noticed higher EGT's of late?). If you use the choke system (as opposed to a primer), check that the choke is fully deployed. Without full rich mixture, it will not start when cold. On several occasions when folk are having difficulty, I remove the cowling and pull up firmly on the choke cables directly on top of the carbs. The engine often starts immediately. But I'd bet it's the battery.

Hope this helps.
Best regards
Rob
