Date Posted: Fri, Oct 11 2013, 13:33:44 GMT In reply to: Rob Freestone 's message, "Starting" on Wed, Oct 09 2013, 21:24:02 GMT Thanks for that info Rob, My present battery is a Motobatt MBTZ7S. I've just checked the spec and (when new) its 6.5AH capacity with 100amp CCA (cold cranking current). I always new it was (stupidly) small but I chose it because of weight issues (it only weighs 2.1kg). Having said that if I hadn't let it go flat and also over voltage charged it I think I might have got 3 years out of it. I've just ordered a slightly bigger MBTX7U battery (8AH, 115amp CCA, 2.6kg). And my charging circuit is now sorted (new £30 m/cycle regulator from Ebay and an "always on when engine running" landing light to soak up some of the surplus alternator output). With this setup when the engine is running the battery voltage climbs to and then stays at 14.2v. I also have a relay that is operated by a "charging on" switch on the control panel, so I can isolate the alternator and regulator from the battery and aircraft electrics if the regulator were to fail. I found yesterday that to start the engine from cold with my dying battery (only getting 600rpm on the Avia taco) I had to shut down the gap on one of the plugs to 0.008". I'll note the cranking rpm with the new battery and follow your advice of replacing that battery when the cranking rpm (mags off) falls much below that figure. On the choke versus primer issue, when I first fitted my new 582 engine I configured it with the choke, but that seemed a bit hit and miss (if it didn't start I couldn't decide if it was too rich or too lean). So I reverted to a primer. Rather than the standard Pular arrangement its a fuel tap in the the engine bay that is Tee'd off the fuel line to one carb. To prime the engine I turn on the electric pump and then open the tap for a few seconds (via a cable in the cockpit). It works just fine. Thanks again Bob [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
