Many thanks for doing those measurements and for your suggestions. I think I'll do exactly as you suggest.

Although my round holes for inspecting the aileron bell cranks have aluminium clip-in covers, the rings bonded to the inside of those holes (to stop the covers falling though) have 4 riveted nut inserts. If the new inspection covers work well I might replace the aluminium covers with wooden screw on plates as well.
