I thought the wing tanks were so close to the centre of lift that the CofG does not move (much) as the fuel level changes.

But for the firewall tank to move the CofG forward it must contain fuel which cannot be used (because burning it would cause the CofG to move too far back)? If so it would be better to move the CofG by putting some ballast as close to the nose of the aircraft as possible. Having a longer "arm" the weight increase due to the ballast would be smaller. Or even move the battery forward or fit a short propshaft extension?

Perhaps there is another reason for the firewall tank - leaking wing tanks?
