Subject: Replaced a bum CA bushing/random stuff

In addition to all the rear end rattling that you're all so tired of hearing about, I've noticed noise from the LF wheel over railroad tracks/expansion joints/etc. I always attributed it to the urethane bushings. Well, I noticed a while back that the CA end had a bit of play in the bushing. So I figured that was the noise. Since the urethane bushing allows the CA to turn, I thought it might be okay to let it move just a bit. The noise got progressively worse, and eventually I started feeling it under braking. I could feel the wheel moving just a bit when I hit the brakes hard.

That, I definitely did not like. Since I just happened to have an extra CA bushing laying around, the other night I took off the lollipop and put the other bushing onto the CA. Wonder of wonders, it doesn't move at all. So I installed it in the lollipop (not exactly a cakewalk without a press, but I got it done).

Lemme tell you, it's really cool to have CA bushings that don't allow the CA end to move! The car feels more solid and I don't hear funny noises anymore.

Let the "I told you so" comments start, but I'm leaning towards going back to rubber CA bushings. I don't think I'd mind the extra solidity that they'd provide by preloading onto the CA ends. For now, I'll stay with what I have, but when/if these urethane bushings go bad (and I've had them fail on both sides in the last year+), I think I'll be putting the solid rubber M3 bushings in, instead of urethane ones again.

On my rattly rear end front, I might take out the p-brake cables this weekend, sand off the rusty parts, and re-install with some grease. Or I might pull them out of the car entirely and test drive it w/o them in. I really am thinking (again) that they're the culprits.

Also, you all will be happy to know that I am planning a full wash/wax this weekend (assuming the weather cooperates), which will be the first time I've done that on the E30. Hey, it's only been 1.5 years, it's probably time. I might put the Ronal's and S-03s on this weekend, too. I should give myself a couple of weeks to get used to them before the first autoX of the year on 30 April.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and let's all cross our fingers for a BEN recovery over the next couple of days.
