When a "good enema" was proposed in "Bonnie's" house, it usually meant that the intent was to totally clean out the digestive system as opposed to merely initiating a BM. For us kids, a good enema often meant multiple fills and releases, with soapsuds until the returns were clear. Those other quickies were quite common and satisfied her inspections of the results. With my younger sisters, the bulb was used more often than the enema bag my sister and I experienced while grandma was still alive.

I recall my mom expressing her own need of a "good enema" as she was preparing for those tests that involved her digestive issues. In one case after Sunday dinner, with the whole family present at grandma's, mom was unable to resist dessert that was ready after the time she was told to be NPO. When challenged by grandma and my aunt, mom said she would be sure to take a "good enema" and repeat it as often as she needed to assure she was empty.

Although we kids were aware that grandma was assisting her very late into the evening, we had been told to use the bathroom and stay in our room and go to sleep. We stayed awake and listened to the sounds as mom complained about the extra soapy enemas grandma was giving her. We thought it only fitting that she got to experience what we had been put through at times. In the morning, we couldn't wait to see the wet enema bag hanging back in the shower/tub
