Growing up (as a little kid), I got badly constipated numerous
times. My mother's first approach was a small dose of a mild laxative which often failed. Say a 1/2 of a square of Ex-lax or one table spoon of Milk of Magnesia. I suspect a larger dose, or a second dose of the laxative would have done the trick every time. Twice the laxative failed and then, my mother said those dread words, "you need a good enema". I did not like the idea of taking an enema.

Mom would make me lie down on the bed, face down. I had to lower my pants and underwear. Mom would fill the enema bag
with warm water and hang it up. She would then insert the
nozzle into me. I did not like that part. She would open up
the clamp and the water would flow into me. I also got cramps. After some time, she would clamp the tube and remove the nozzle. I had to hold the enema for three minutes. She would set a timer.

She made it clear to me, that if I caused a fuss I would be punished.

The one good think I can say was that the enema always solved
my constipation problem.
