With me, my parents stopped it and started allowing me to manage my own bowel movements when I was 11 and just on the brink of puberty. My sister wasn't so lucky, they were still doing her in her late teens. And that's how it is now with my own daughter - twenty (give or take) but still being merde-managed (with suppositories and enemas) due to her long-term problems.
