Subject: Speed of play

I noticed this thread start on the USGA forum and feel it will be short lived as it is not technically handicap system related.
I feel this would be an interesting topic for dicussion here.
What slope/rating/tees should you play?
Here is my twopence worth.
I am an 18 handicap (not USGA sanctioned). I typically play from the whites, although I have friends of similar skills who prefer to play from further back, so occasionally accomodate these 'experts'.
Around here the average slope is about 120.
With 4 golfers of my ability, riding 18, I would have to say 4hr 15min would be optimum for these courses (white tees). Typically, a weekend round will take longer, because of too close together tee times, and lesser skilled golfers. No criticism here, I expect this nowadays, and accept that new, high handicap golfers need to play. It is usually the fault of the golf course.
Interestingly, it is possible for these same golfers to walk 18 holes in under 4 hours consistently (in optimal conditions). This is not helpful though, because of the loss of cart revenue to the courses, and the need to have place to hold your beer can!:o)
Sincerely,
Duncan Mackenzie
