With a delighted smile, L’van gratefully accepted the egg from the queen fire-lizard. “Thank you!” He told her happily, placing it gently in his belt-pouch, which he had filled with soft cloth and sand from the Hatching Sands to keep it warm specially. It was tiny!
I bet she’ll be small. At least Nagaina can’t be annoyed with her if she isn’t a size rival…
He offered the flit a meatroll, in return for her generosity, and almost laughed out loud in triumph when the girl spoke with hand-gestures. It was her!
“If you could sign a little more slowly…” He asked. “I didn’t learn it as well as Matt did…” The man who had taught Matt had also given L’van lessons in using hand-speak, but he hadn’t been very quick to pick it up. Matt found it a lot more useful when communicating with Lok underwater, so he had learned more complex sentences.
“But you’re Synthis, aren’t you?” He asked her, not really having been able to understand her name. “Matt talks about you all the time. You two have really hit it off! I’m L’van, by the way, rider of blue Arrth. Or I will be, once I complete Weyrling Training.” He grinned. “Nagaina – that’s my queen – she just resents me talking to other women. She doesn’t even like me petting Lok!” She had actually tried to attack the dolphin, and so they never went near each other. “I bet Matt’s glad she isn’t his! Are you here to be a dolphineer, or a candidate?”
