The 17-turn-old boy walked with surprising speed into the Sands in a hurry, whispering to himself.

�Shards! I�m late� I�m late� by the shell, half the clutch must�ve hatched by now��

Looking around in his haste, he noted that a great deal of eggs had hatched. Shaking slightly, he walked up with the other candidates, who appeared to be keeping their distance from the clutch. About half a dragon�s length? Well, Kovu didn�t know much about Weyr life� maybe this was normal.

Kovu decidedly kept his distance, though he was right up with the people closest the eggs. Shaing slightly, he made sure to keep a gooddeal away from the others, making sure not to make any contact whatsoever with the other candidates. Shaking his black mane of hair, the dark-skinned teen held his head high. When dealing with unknown people, he knew it best to appear completely unafraid, unfazed� though inside he was terrified.

Of all Zirre had told him, what was lies? Kovu had been raised by the woman, and though he knew she wasn�t apt to lie for no reason, he and everyone else knew she hated the Weyr most of all. Together with the other Weyr-hating folk, she�d told Kovu stories about the Weyr since he just a babe. Kovu�s eyes flickered fearfully toward the queen. Was it true what they said, that dragons sometimes ate humans? If so, what would become of him if he didn�t Impress? Kovu shook his head nervously. Sure, he may be strong enough to take on some of the riders here, but a dragon�? Even a baby green had more power then he did, if the stories were true.

However, if dragons did such things, then why on Pern were they so popular? They couldn�t, they just couldn�t� Though, these thoughts were less than comforting. The gold looked big enough to swallow him whole. Not a pleasant thought.

Wondering, he looked around. Several had Impressed, and his heart pounded as he saw a girl actually get mauled by a wandering hatchling. Looking away with fearful amber eyes, he saw a boy who was apparently freaking out and shaking his friend by the shoulders. A bit distrubed, Kovu set his eyes to the ground for a while. At least the sand seemed sane�

Kovu looked up after a few minutes of calming himself down, and decided that maybe he could talk to someone� though, definetly not the guy that was freaking out. Maybe having a sane conversation would help to calm his nerves�

Spying a girl not too far from where he was, he decided she looked nice enough (though you could never tell), and walked over to her. Hesitantly, he offered her his hand to Mahiri.

�Hello.� He said softly. �I�m Kovu. Er� what color do you think you�d like?�

Of course, Kovu barely knew what the colors were, just that greens and golds were female. Technically, he was probably just going to dig himself into a hole�

((Alright� He�s good with any color, though I don�t believe he could Impress the gold. XD))
