Tathan watched warily when A’ron approached his weyrmate, uncertain how to react to another person. He was rather like a wild animal when another of its kind makes itself known – he had to stay still and see if it was a threat. But the greenrider didn’t seem to be focused on anything except M’klern, so Tathan went back to the task at hand. He had almost reached the bloody patch in the sand, and briefly he wondered what caused it, but he had no idea (this was probably a good thing, since it would have done nothing to aid his transition into the Weyr if he knew what hatchling dragons were capable of), so he simply raked over it, leaving only furrowed golden sand in his wake.

He heard Mesatith speak to him, but he did his best to ignore her efforts at extracting his name – when Tathan didn’t know what to think, or where a voice was coming from, he didn’t do anything. And since he didn’t know which of the dragons was talking to him, or what their motive was for making him talk, he decided that silence was the best policy. Any other person would have known it was the green speaking, since the voice was female, but Tath barely realised that there were only five colours, let alone knew which ones were female and which male. Browns were bigger than greens, to be sure, but queens were bigger than bronzes, browns and blues – so size was hardly an indication of gender.

Only the fear of being punished for shirking a task kept him raking the sand when Creth moved. The other drudges had assured the boy that dragons would not harm humans with any malice, and he could see that the brown was intent on the green, but Tathan was raised to be suspicious, and he would stay so until the day he died.

((So…Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is worth seeing? And hello, DS!))
