Author: Atiyana - Loriath, Martan
Subject: Always look on the bright side of life!

Dusting off her hands and watching Loriath with an unmistakeable air of pride, Atiyana couldn’t help the broad smile on her face as she studied her dragon. The green was everything a dragon should be – and more. Much more. And Atiyana would ride her for the rest of her life. She had never felt so happy. Knowing she was being watched, Loriath paused for a moment and looked up at her human with eyes that whirled in amusement.

I told you I was wonderful. She said with a simple arrogance that made Ati splutter with laughter. But such things as retorting were above her, so the green turned back to her meal and stopped only when a man walked over, hanging back a little and watching her. Ati, who is that?

Her question was instantly answered. “FATHER!” Atiyana yelled, hurling herself at Martan and hugging him tightly. “Father! I did it!”

The man planted a kiss on the top of his daughter’s head. “You did. I’m so proud of you, Ati – and I know your mother will be when I tell her.”

“You’ll tell her?”

“I’ll send a note via Sarri the moment I get the chance.”

Of course, Loriath couldn’t go unnoticed for long. With a noise the equivalent of a human trying to attract attention, the green raised her head to look at Martan when he turned to look at her. The ex-rider bowed low to her, breaking away from his daughter’s embrace to do so, and the green allowed him to scratch her eyeridge. “And what’s your name, fair lady?”

Loriath. The green told him, not even waiting for Atiyana to introduce her. It was normal for a dragon to speak to Martan – they seemed to recognise that he needed them. That was why he had stayed at the Weyr. But though he was used to such a gesture as being spoken to, Martan still inclined his head in respect.

“Thank you, Loriath. I know you and my daughter will be prosperous together.” He stepped back, allowing Atiyana to replace him at her dragon’s head, and a satisfied Loriath went back to her meal. “Well done, Atiyana.” She could see the slight glimmer of tears in his eyes as he hugged her once more and turned to leave, making his way back to his quarters.

‘Have I upset him, Loriath?’ Atiyana frowned. ‘I thought he’d be so pleased for me…’

He is. The dragon replied simply. He is just proud and happy. But I am the pressing concern at the moment, and I require a bath.

She was right. Blood covered her muzzle, and some of the fluid from the egg had hardened on her wings. So Atiyana led her to the Perches, the dragon pausing every now and then to admire herself.
