Martan didn’t contradict Marja when she said she might be too old for the clutch – he had never been good at placing ages, but she looked just a few years two old for standing. A pity. She looked like she had a good head on her shoulders. But he smiled when she told him her talent. “Of course! We don’t have too many right now – a lot of the Healer students became Weyrlings, you see.” They needed a lot more Healers – that much he knew. They didn’t get anything too bad around here, just normal dragon and rider accidents.

He hesitated for just a moment when Liandro asked him that question, looking away for a moment. Fifteen years had dulled the pain of being reminded that he wasn’t a dragonrider any more, and he mostly now hesitated to tell people because he didn’t want them to tiptoe around him, or give him sympathetic looks. He had been given enough of them in his time, that was for sure.

But he was interrupted by the arrival of two young men, one a wher-handler, it seemed, the other of debateable rank – who seemed to be a little faltering on his name and the relationship between them. For a moment he stared at the two, catching something in the mistake Senko had made with his name, but he shook it off. Non-riders were rare – three in the same Weyr, at the same time? It had never been heard of!

“I’m Martan – ex-rider, and teacher,” he gave Liandro a pointed look, letting him know that he was answering the question. “And these are Journeywoman Healer Marja, and Liandro, a Candidate. They’re shipwreck survivors, so I’m taking them to the Weyr. Are you two recent transfers?”
