After that, diapers were mandatory, typically double Curity cloth diapers and Playtex rubber panties. I might start off with shorts or shortalls over my thick diapers, but after my first changing, I typically didn't get them back. I also was subject to being changed wherever it was convenient, sometimes on the picnic tables at roadside rest stops. Such public changings always seemed to attract any nearby girls, who always seemed interested to help mom with "the baby." My mom also had similar phobias against public rest rooms, which, in her telling, were cesspools of filth and disease, and the haunts of unsavory men, which were additional reasons to keep me in diapers for car trips. Additionally, she frequently made me wear a child safety harness whenever we stopped, "for my own protection," as she put it. It was always embarrassing for me to be seen this way. But mom was dismissive of any complaints I might make. I learned early on that it was best to just keep my mouth shut and not to risk a public spanking.
