Mom was converted by my disrespectful adolescent attitude. I think my aunt (Dad's sister) had a a lot to do with it. Mom was always comparing how well my similarly aged cousin acted compared to me. My aunt, who used to come over to our home quite a bit, saw some of my behavior and was not reticent about saying what I needed in front of me. I am sure they had longer talks in private. Mom and Dad both together announced the change. They said they had decided they had stopped spanking too soon. I did always get them with the hairbrush. I did get a couple spankings from Dad, but it was mostly Mom. I never got spanked by my aunt. And whether they spank or not (and I am not pro-spanking unless absolutely necessary ) I don't think parents should let the kind of behavior which does not meet their expectations (assuming those are not unrealistic) just go unchecked because it is "normal." I have a much better life and appreciation of life because they did guide me over that rough patch. I see so many of my contemporaries (including old friends of mine) who are lost, and that is when their drift seemed to begin. When they announced the new discipline I was indeed shocked, but was smart enough not to protest or make a scene. It was a couple days before I actually got it. As I have said, for a while all it did was anger me. But I was able, with the help of some advise and support from kids in the same boat, to come to terms with it, and then a growth in maturity began as I made a conscious effort to end it.
