Those are good tips. I hope some kids, especially those in their teens, will take advantage of them. My experience, which sounds kind of similar to yours, is an example of working with parents to stop spanking.

Ten years ago when I was thirteen, my parents started spanking again, after a five year hiatus. My mother was the impetus behind it. That is kind of strange because I come from a mixed family. My Dad is Irish Catholic and Mom is a Russian Jew. Spanking is not really very common in Jewish culture, but when we were young Mom deferred to Dad. But when I was thirteen it was all Mom.

I was a high achieving, well behaved young teenager, but I started to get that attitude of rebelliousness, sassiness and backtalk, which though common at that age was too much for mother. So they started spanking. For a while that g_d awful hairbrush only made me angry. But then I was lucky enough to fall in with a small group of kids my age who were still spanked. I learned it was up to me to stop this childish indignity --and anger, blaming my parents and further rebelliousness had the opposite effect.

So I made a conscious effort to roll back the worst of my sulking, backtalk, etc. The other thing I did was talk to them about spanking at calm times --how to prevent them and alternative punishments. The spankings slowed down and stopped by the time I was fifteen.

I hope you are able to do the same.

I am sixteen and mama says I am not too old for a whoopin, but it has been four months so I really think they may have stopped. The idea of talking to a parent about it is good. It is embarrassing, but works. However one mistake I made was arguing how all the research says spanking doesn't work, it is old fashioned and that kind of thing. That backfired for me. Don't be critical in that way.

Although I don't believe I was abused. I agree 100% with the comment by VoR.
