Alfred & Taylor,

I am a teacher and was not familiar with the book. However I read it online and some of the commentary. I think the depth of it is fantastic. One criticism was that the last ducking always got a spank. Some commentators thought it unfair, because someone always has to be last. Poppycock on that, it is the mental thinking which leads to every kid getting a participation award.

The way I would explain it to kids is that no parent or teacher is going to spank them for just being last, but LIFE will! If they are last in school or work, thy will pay a price greater than a spanking. In fact you could even be a Peking Duck dinner!

But we are more civilized now I guess. Today I believe only toddlers under age three or so are in danger of getting vaccinated this way, but it is still a good analogy for spanking parents to use.
