Congratulations on your position. I had a great relationship with the university Newman House director and chaplain for a nearby Dominican College.

Long ago we had demerits at my private secular hs. More than 7 and you had to work them off by attending detention and writing an exact copy of an arbitrarily chosen page from a dictionary they handed out. A total waste of your time and that was the point. Make you two hours older and you have nothing whatever to show for it. I once got 10 and had to work off 10-7=3. I wanted to study but they forced you to turn yourself into a very slow copy machine!

Times have changed but back then even the protestant kids all over town knew about a brother at the local Benedictine high school. He was called Father Al and I suppose he was a priest who taught at the school. He would give kids a tap on the head with a real band drummer's drum stick. One rumor had it that a kid once jumped out a window to avoid his tap. Other kids had stories about the Nuns at the girls school linked via the church with the boys hs.

Public schools could paddle and did. Amazingly I never got it but kids in my cabin at scout camp said at their Middle School you could trade laps for licks. Some said they did and it was 1 for 1. You had to run around the long city block for each lick you had earned. I was a runner so I would probably have gladly taken the laps. What would you have chosen? Did you have a demerit to paddle licks system at home. Perhaps 1 for 1 after you had the basic 5?

Mr. Alfred,

I would have gladly exchanged licks for laps. I was involved in athletics and in good shape. And I hated spankings!

Demerits were wiped clean each quarter. I don't think any of us kids ever got ten or more demerits per quarter. I cannot recall if I ever got paddled for demerits. However, I know I got it for various bad behavior at school. My parents knew EVERYTHING that happened!

Often even the most dedicated spanko reading this board is likely to approach spankings with deep respect and with a kind of approach/avoidance perspective. There are lots of benefits but they can be a bit of attention hogs. During and afterwards, they get foregrounded! They stay on your mind for a day or two. Reminder reflections are how they work to improve our behavior.

How did you meet your husband and what is like to have twins? A lot of changes since the old forum days.

Mr. Alfred:

I met my husband in college. He was considering the priesthood, but I lured him away from Mother Church🥰 He is a techie, and a great lover, husband and father. Our children are almost two years apart, the same as my brother Kevin and I. God willing, and the vagaries of NFP, we expect to have more. A nice thing about my job is free pre-school and school, and I am close by and connected. Also Mom and Dad are close by, and (so far🙂) love babysitting.

I am sure I always tried to avoid spankings, the older I was the more consciously I tried not to do things I knew would get me spanked. But also sometimes did it anyway. I had the arrogance of youth that this time I would get away with it. 🙂However,I think I did always realize the "benefits." Even though sometimes I got mad about a particular spanking being "Unfair" I did always realize my parents were doing it for what they perceived as " my own good."

I have a lot of trouble keeping everyone from the old days straight. I do remember your older brother said it really upset him to hear you crying from the spanking you earned for not coming promptly when your Mom sent your sister fetch you.

I need a team roster. Here are a few names from the recesses of my memory: PJ or Paterson James, Benji, Sean, CALEB, Chandler, Kevin, Shannon, and Rat. There was another very Orthodox Jewish family headed by BobE who had a handicap, but whatever his handicap was, he could still deliver a firm spanking. His kids were all given very traditional names from the Hebrew Scriptures or OT. What are the names of your children?

Best wishes on the NFP front. Worked in my experience but we didn't think it was part of the plan but lo and behold, as they say, God works in mysterious ways.

That was probably Sean, my oldest brother. Me, Sean and Kevin are almost "Irish Twins" and Shannon came a little later. Sean was always very protective and I a BIG crier when being spanked.
