It is hard to know if abstaining from saying hello helped them but odds are it avoided some awkward moments for them.

When it is a little kid and I comment in one of those situations. I try to help the parent chill out a bit. I often mention that their kid is so much nicer than I was and I give an example from my rambunctious past, like having shopping cart races in the store.

Actually I'm glad I didn't go over and defuse the situation because she's kind of a brat and probably deserved a whoopin.

I also think that it is the sole responsibility of the parents to decide whether, how and how much beatings their child needs. In our neighbourhood, no one would interfere, neither one way nor the other
