Maybe it is a popular activity amongst children. Coukd your hands reach the floor if you stretched because usually the kids who hang upside down cannot even reach the floor with their hands which looks a bit scary to me. Strange as I always thought the reason children like to hang upside down on monkey bars is because it is funny to see the world upside down? Why would you hang by your knees and not look at the perspective? I just thought one of the joys of being hung by the knees is seeing everything from that position.
